Sanjay Dutt - Plans and Projects

Released on July 16: LAMHAA
Sanjay Dutt in Lamhaa
Rahul Dholakia who directed the film Parzania, did cast Sanjay Dutt for the lead role in GS Entertainment's film Lamha, a thriller taking place in Jammu and Kashmir: "It is through Sanjay that we will see the valley and what is happening there." Dholakia plans to steer clear of the troubled region's politics or militancy and focus on its people instead. "It is a film that would project how people are living in Kashmir and how people are living with multiple identities. It is a thriller for sure and I don't intend to use the popular song and dance sequences in the movie, which will have a serious theme." Bunty and Juspreet Singh Walia are producing the film, and Sanjay's co-stars are Kunal Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Anupam Kher, Vipin Sharma and Shernaz Patel. Shooting started in October 2008. Lamha will be pictured in Srinagar, Manali, Naggar, on the 13,050-feet high Rohtang Pass, the gateway to Lahaul-Spiti, Solang Nullah, Patlikul and in Mumbai. Sanjay plays an undercover cop with a new raw, rough, tough and stunning look: a salt-and-pepper beard and his hair dyed in the same colour...

Double Dhamaal (in production)
Producer Ashok Thakeria and director Indra Kumar are planning a sequel to their successful comedy Dhamaal. This time the heroes shall get heroines too; talks are on with Bipasha Basu, Sameera Reddy, Vidya Balan and Kangna Ranaut. The script is being worked out - and Indra Kumar insists that Sanjay will be a part of it again: "...one thing is for sure, Dhamaal won't happen without Sanjay Dutt. In spite of his troubles he makes people fall of their chairs in Dhamaal. I don't know how he does it. I call him super-human. There's no question of Dhamaal 2 without Sanju." The first script was rejected as not good enough but now Kumar seems to be happy with the result. Dhamaal 2 will take off where the first part ended. The film will go on floors mid August 2010.

Sanjay Dutt in Knock Out
Knock Out (release on October 1, 2010)
Set in real time (11 am to 1 pm), the political thriller Knockout will have no songs and frills. Directed by the Hyderabad-based Mani Shankar, Knockout is said about siphoning and laundering of trillions of dollars from India and being placed in unknown locations the world over. Sanjay Dutt and Irrfan Khan are said to play two government agents (while other sources claim that Sanjay plays an assassin hunting his victim with a sniper rifle), their co-star as a journalist will be Kangna Ranaut. Mani Shankar says, “The film is partly based on what I saw and heard when I was on the staff in the Prime Minister’s office between 1994-1995. As part of his advisory team during my travels all over the world with the PM, I heard things that never left my mind. I knew some day I’d make a film about what I knew from the whispers in the corridors of power.” The expose promises to blow the lid off many international financial scandals where India has been involved. Rumours about the film being a remake of Phone Booth were refuted by producer Sohail Maklai, first reports about that the three lead actors never will meet on screen were obviously not correct. The British choreographer Joey Ansah who directed stunts for Matt Damon in The Bourne Ultimatum directed the climax and also was Sanjay's adversary fighter.

Koochie Koochie Hota Hai (animation movie)
In springtime 2009, rumours said that Sanjay, due to schedule problems, had to turn down Karan Johar's offer to lend his voice to one of the characters in the animated animal version of Johar's classic Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Obviously these rumours were false as this trailer proves. The figure Sanjay lent his voice to seems to parallel the character Salman Khan played in the original movie.

Sanjay Dutt in Pitaah
Plans / Rumours
21 Battle of Saragarhi - From Ashes to Glory (shelved)
Sanjay Dutt Productions and G S Entertainment will produce a period film based on the battle of Saragarhi which was fought during the Tirah Campaign on 12 September 1897 between 21 Sikhs of a Sikh Regiment of British India, defending an army post, and 10,000 Afghan and Orakzai tribesmen in a last stand; all the Sikh soldiers fell. Rohit Jugraj will direct the film; Sanjay as the lead actor will play Havildar Ishar Singh, who led the Sikh onslaught in that battle. Bunty Walia from G S Entertainment, who is a Sikh, had been dreaming of making a film on this event for a long time; when Rohit Jugraj appraoched him with the same idea, they talked to Sanjay about it as they wanted him to play the Sikh leader. Sanjay liked the story and was even wiling to produce the film. It will have many special effects, and a lot of technicians from abroad are on board, some of them having assisted on the Hollywood film 300; Rohit is in talks with special effects supervisor Chris Watts and cinematographer Christopher Doyle. With a budget is estimated to be around Rs 200 crore (Bunty: "We have to pay 21 actors for this film!") this might become one of Hindi Cinema's most expensive films. The shooting will be in Morocco as the topography of Morocco is quite similar to the topography of the North West Province where the Battle of Saragarhi took place. As a lot of pre-production is required, it will take some time before shooting starts.

He has been doing a lot of anti-drugs campaigns. The minute he heard the story, he said he was on. The protagonist's plunge into a haze of drugs and then his redemption stuck an immediate chord in Sanjay Dutt's heart." The third segment of the plot will see Sanjay taking on drug cartels from the world over. "It's a film where in a fictional language, Sanjay Dutt will tell the youth how dangerous drug abuse is and how drugs need to be destroyed." Talking about the choice of Sanjay Dutt for the lead role, writer and director of Charles & I, Prawaal Raman said, "Charles is a complex character - a charming man with a dangerous mind and dangerous intentions. Finding the right actor who has the ability to exude all these qualities at the same time was a tough call. We were looking for an actor who radiates star power coupled with the finest acting prowess to portray Charles. The only actor in my opinion who fit that profile was Sanjay Dutt". Aditya Shastri, CEO People Pictures (who meanwhile, however, backed out), commenting on the choice of the leading man says, "Sanjay Dutt is a terrific human being and a gifted actor who has the versatility to play diverse roles with unbeatable flair." Herman Knippenberg, the Dutch diplomat who investigated Sobhraj's case, has been roped in as consultant for this film. Talismaan (planned; shelved?)
Vinod Chopra Films' Talismaan will star Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt (in a pivotal, negative role). Talismaan is a romantic fantasy adventure inspired by epic novel, Chandrakanta, written in 1892 by Babu Devaki Nandan Khatri. It interweaves and mixes elements of magic, fantasy and war. Director Ram Madhvani says, "Vinod gave me a book to read Chandrakanta, written 50 years before Lord Of The Rings and 100 years before Harry Potter. I was amazed at its ideas and fantasy elements. He set me off on a journey. Talismaan is a love story, a fantasy and uses magic. It has a unique Indianness and yet is modern and contemporary. It's time we had a fantasy film we can call our own and one we can be proud off. Talismaan is my attempt to do just that. The film is very heavy on special effects etc and therefore a lot of time is being spent on pre-production. The storyboarding, concept art etc, requires detailing and research. It's not a film you write the script for and then go on the floors to shoot it straightaway." Sanjay Dutt says, "Vinod sir and Ram narrated the script to me and I was blown away. Talismaan is a journey I am looking forward to." Shooting will be in Bhutan and in Mumbai.
Chandrakanta is the story of prince Virendra Singh, who is in love with the princess of a rival kingdom, Chandrakanta. Thrown into this love story is a magical maze in an old abandoned fort which guards a huge treasure trove. Virendra Singh and Chandrakanta have to ensure that their love wins against evil villains like King Shivdutt of another kingdom, who wants to capture the treasure. Also after the treasure are 'aiyyars' or super-spies who have the magical powers of transforming themselves into another person, and are experts in all modes of warfare.
