K
offee with Karan, 2004

Sushmita Sen, Karan Johar and Sanjay Dutt

In the first season of his TV talk show Koffee with Karan Karan Johar hosted Sanjay Dutt together with Sushmita Sen.

(Part 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5
)

Karan welcomed "the rock star of the industry, the very stylish headturner and superstar Sanjay Dutt". First he talked about serious issues: "It hasn't been easy for you, you had a hell of a life, many ups and downs - what keeps you going?" Sanjay answered simply: "You get a problem and you face it." Frankly and straightforward he talked about the ups and downs in his life, his drug phase and his time in jail which both have tought him a lot for his life: "I have no regrets, Karan. I don't have any kind of bad feelings." The atmosphere was very quiet and emotional when Sanjay recalled the time when his father told him in jail that now there was nothing left what he could do for him - and how this had shattered him...

After a little break there were more easy issues, and even Sanjay could laugh out loud several times. Questioned about love stories in his life, Sanjay answered: "Karan, I love to be loved!" and that he nowadays was more romantic than earlier. Later he also talked about his religiousness and that he's praying a lot. When Sush asked him: "Have you ever regretted being with a woman?", his answer was a firm "no." And questioned how often there was real love behind his affairs he assured "all the time" and added: "I have a big heart."

Sanjay won the Rapid Fire Round. Here are some of his best answers:

Karan: "Three words to describe yourself."
Sanju (without hesitation): "Sexy."
(Sanju and Sush guffowed. Karan remembered Sanju that he had to name two more words.)
Sanju: "A man. A tiger."

Karan: "The toughest thing about being Sanjay Dutt is..."
Sanju: "Being kind."
Karan: "The best thing about being Sanjay Dutt is..."
Sanju (smiling): "Kind again."

Karan: "The one thing that really turns you on in a woman is..."
Sanju (without hesitation): "Her feet." (He just couldn't explain why...)

Karan: "The sexiest woman alive in India is..."
Sanju: "Mallika Sherawat." (Very courageous as Sush was sitting beside him...)

Karan: "The art of living according to you is..."
Sanju: "The art of giving."

Karan: "The strangest rumour you ever heard about you was..."
Sanju: "That I have an affair with a donkey."

Karan: "Munnabhai or Vaastav?"
Sanju (thinks long, shakes his head, cannot decide)
Sush: "Munnabhai!!!"

Karan: "Sushmita or Aishwarya?"
Sanju: "Sushmita."

Karan: "Shahrukh or Salman?"
Sanju: "Salman."

In the end loads of heroines (Shilpa, Sameera, Kareena, Amisha, Bipasha etc.), questioned about "the Sanju effect", ravished about the "Deadly Dutt", his "body language", "the way he walks", "the way he talks" and about the "hottest man ever" with "a certain style which nobody else has". Afterwards Sanjay threw a kiss to the camera and bade godd-bye saying
"I love you all - and God bless".

On March 12, 2006 Sanjay Dutt appeared on the Simi Garewal Show; one week later he returned together with his sister Priya and her husband Owen Roncon.

(Interview with Sanjay: Part 1 - 2 - 3; Interview with Sanjay and Priya: Part 1 - 2)

Once again Sanjay opened his heart and talked about the ups and downs in his life with that unsparing honesty and straightforwardness I admire so much. Very touching were the moments when sequences from an older interview with late Sunil Dutt were played.

Questioned how all these years have changed him, Sanjay answered: "I've become more tolerant, more forgiving, I don't keep any malice in my heart." And when Simi asked him whether he would like to start his life all over again, he replied: "I think my life HAS started all over again".

In the end Simi said that Sanjay was one of the bravest men she ever met as he always showed great courage in life facing endless difficulties, and as she called him a hero Sanjay could just smile gratefully...

Apparently, the cook burst into tears, telling Sanjay that the latter hadn't eaten in two days. He hadn't felt a thing. "There is nothing cool about taking drugs," says Sanjay, a true survivor who finally kicked his deadly habit. He also recalls the many hardships he has faced, and speaks about his rock solid family who always stood by him. "I am lucky to have sisters like Priya and Namrata," he says. "The only people I miss are mum and dad."

Suniel Shetty also speaks of his old friend's helpful nature and his not-so-publicised social work. He defines Sanjay as a man with a heart of gold, and mentions difficult times when the former supported him. Speaking about his transformation from deadly Dutt to lovable Munnabhai, Sanjay agrees that the film played a significant role in his life, while creating a revolution of sorts across the country.
